Ponton Ponton Weldon Police Department

An ongoing feud between family members resulted in an attempted shooting Monday in the Scoco Park community of Weldon.

Captain James Avens of the Weldon Police Department said Michael Bernard “Mike Mike” Ponton Jr., 20, fired at least three shots at his cousin, Luther Terry, and fled.

Terry was not injured. Warrants have been obtained for Ponton’s arrest on charges of attempted murder and going armed to the terror of the people.

The police department received a 911 call shortly before 11:30 a.m., Avens said.

Ponton, who lives between houses in Weldon and Halifax, is known to frequent the immediate area as well as Raleigh.

He is considered armed and dangerous.

Avens said Monday’s shooting stems from a shooting in December in which Ponton and Alphonso “Tyson” Williams, 22, were charged with attempted first degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, shooting in an occupied vehicle, assault by pointing a gun and going armed to the terror of the people.

That shooting occurred at 209 Ransome Circle, a house the Weldon Police Department and state Alcohol Law Enforcement are trying to shut down through nuisance abatement laws.

Williams and Ponton, who are brothers, and Terry, a first cousin of the pair, are frequenters at the house, which has been targeted for drug sales and is known in the Scoco Park community as the Community House and by police as Weldon Police Department Substation South.

In the December shooting, there was an argument over money between the cousins and Williams allegedly fired two shots at Terry, one bullet striking him in the arm and going through his chest, Avens said then. Terry was released from the hospital.

Anyone with information on Ponton’s whereabouts is encouraged to call the Weldon Police Department at 252-536-3136 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.

This young man is definitely a threat to society. He obviously does not care about anyone's life. I see all those charges and is puzzled that he is still on the streets in which I live. He is known to shoot at people and justice needs to be served because if he keeps getting out of jail then he will continue to do what he do...shoot. One day a life may be taken by his actions because he use a gun for a resolution to his problems. Please halifax county judicial system, please put this young man where he belong.

I agree with you both. This young man stays in the news & in the streets committing the same crimes. How do he do it? Justice needs to be served once and for all!! Who keep letting him back out & returning to that drug fested community? He is definitely a threat to society & open gun fire anywhere!

HE THINK HE IS BADD. I HAVE KNOWN FOR HIM TO SHOOT AT PEOPLE. JUSTICE NEEDS TO BE SERVED ON HIM BECAUSE IT OBVIOUS HE DOESN'T CARE ABOUT ANYONE ELSE'S LIFE. PLEASE GET HIM OFF THE STREETS BECAUSE HE NEEDS TO BE IN JAIL. IF HE KEEPS GETTING AWAY WITH IT, HE WILL EVENTUALLY KILL SOMEONE!!

CLearly, he is a threat to society. He already has attempted murder charges and was let out on bond. If he shot once, he will shoot again. Its scary to no that someone is walking around like this and not caring about the life of others, meaning he will pull a trigger anytime, anywhere. I agree with T-one, he have no respect for authorities by the look of the photo. Hopefully, when he is caught this time, he will not get out and Justice will be served. We dont need people on the streets like this who cannot respect the lives of others and continue to increase the death rate/shooting rate in such a small area. I feel for the family.

Judging by the photo...he has no respect for authority. Why was he out anyway if he already had one attempted murder charge? How much was the bond? Seems to me that Scoco Park is the new OK corrale. the Earps and Clantons.

What a punk mug-shot! If he's so tough, why is he hiding? Show yourself, be proud of the charges that you have incurred!
