The driver of the truck that struck her was charged with DWI, authorities say.
George, of Roanoke Rapids, died about 10 p.m. Sunday at Carolinas Medical Center, where she had been airlifted about 20 hours earlier after being struck on North Tryon Street.
Investigators say George was trying to cross the highway at the 12100 block, between Interstate 485 and the speedway, when she was struck by a southbound Toyota Tundra driven by Travis Scott Moore, 25, of Matthews.
Moore, who was not injured, also was cited by police for a violation of the open container law. Police say he remained at the scene of the collision.
CMPD Sergeant David Sloan said George was at the Bank of America 500 race Saturday evening at the speedway with a group of friends. He said she became separated from the group and was trying to find them when she walked into the highway. Sloan said he does not know if Moore was at the race but said the truck driver was coming from that direction.
Moore was released from jail on $3,000 bond Sunday night, according to public information reviewed by rrspin.com. Information on a court date was not immediately available.
According to the victim's MySpace page, George lived in Roanoke Rapids but attended Johnson & Wales University in Charlotte in 2007 and 2008 and was employed as a chef.
