Lieutenant Chuck Hasty said Deputy Emerson Carroll was investigating a breaking and entering of a shed on Reese’s Store Road around Weldon.
Deputy Carroll found that someone had broken into a shed and started to remove items. When he finished processing the scene and left the area to finish the paperwork a neighbor noticed a strange vehicle parked beside his house.
When the neighbor went to check on the vehicle it drove off at a high rate of speed and ran into the ditch before turning onto Reese’s Store Road and heading toward Highway 301.
As Hasty responded to the call he met the vehicle on Highway 301. As he turned to follow it the vehicle sped off. Hasty stopped the vehicle near the department of social services building.
The driver, Curtis Britt of Weldon, was taken into custody where he was charged with DUI and reckless driving by Trooper Kelly Coggins of the state Highway Patrol.
Deputy Carroll completed his investigation and charged Britt with breaking, entering and larceny, larceny after breaking and entering, attempted larceny and damage to property. He was also served an outstanding order for arrest for injury to property.
Britt was jailed on $11,000 bond and has August 23 and August 31 court dates.
Hasty said the sheriff’s office was appreciative of the neighbor’s assistance. “It helps out when people get involved and assist the officer with things going on in the neighborhood.”
