Latoria Artis already allegedly paid $2,200 for a down payment on a car.
The card’s owner, however, noticed two new charges on their statement totaling $635.77, according to Detective Joe Sealey of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.
These transactions led to Artis being charged with two additional counts of identity theft and obtaining property by false pretense. She was again jailed on $20,000 bond and has a November 24 court date for the new counts.
The latest complaint was received on October 10 by Deputy Chris Scott. The first complaint was received last month when Artis allegedly copied the Visa card number while the customer she was serving waited for their food at a restaurant in Roanoke Rapids.
The woman allegedly used the card the next day to make a $2,200 down payment on a vehicle at Rheasville Truck and Auto.
Then Detective Roy Rooks and Sergeant Randy Keeton, with cooperation from the car dealership, investigated the case and charged Artis with identity theft and attempted obtaining property by false pretense.
The money was transferred back to the customer’s account immediately, according to Rooks.
