Alert residents and a home alarm system thwarted the efforts of two men trying to break into homes in the Highway 903 and Hawkins Chapel Road areas of the county Friday.

A manhunt involving Halifax County Sheriff’s Office deputies and the state Highway Patrol led to the arrests of Trevonta Lynch, 20, and Antonio Diraz Burchette, who is also 20.

“Thanks to the Halifax County citizens that got involved and called 911, these suspects were captured quickly,” Detective James Matthews said in a news release.

Matthews said Deputy S. Rodwell responded to a call to a house on Highway 903 where residents called 911 to report several people were breaking into their home.

When they realized the house was occupied they fled.

Twenty minutes later Deputy H. Phillips was dispatched by the Halifax 911 Center to a house on Hawkins Chapel Road where a neighbor called in another break-in attempt.

When the alarm was tripped, the suspects were seen running toward Highway 48.

Matthews said deputies responded and surrounded the suspects in a wooded area between Hawkins Chapel Road and Highway 48.

Deputy J. Keeter and his dog Brody responded. In several minutes Brody picked up a track.

Phillips, Keeter, Rodwell, Sergeant P. Ward, lieutenants G. Evans and S. Hall, detectives Matthews, J. Sealey and R. Rooks, along with the Highway Patrol, conducted a manhunt for the suspects.

A citizen called Halifax 911 and reported several suspicious males were running through their yard near Butter Wood Lane and Highway 48. Evans spotted one of the suspects and chased him back into the woods.

Evans caught and arrested Lynch of Roanoke Rapids.

A man later identified as Burchette of Littleton was seen running into the woods and Deputy Keeter and Brody ran a track. Brody found Burchette hiding in the woods.

Deputy Phillips arrested Burchette. Both men were transported to the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office for processing. While processing Burchette and Lynch, Halifax 911 received a call from a homeowner on Thelma Road that had just returned home and found their home had been broken into.

Matthews and Sergeant R. Keaton responded. After speaking with the victim,  Matthews reviewed the reports turned in by the deputies and charged Burchette with obstruct, resist and delay, one count felony breaking and entering, one count felony larceny, three counts of injury to real property, two counts of attempted breaking and entering and one count of possession of stolen property.

Lynch was charged with one count of felony breaking and entering, one count felony larceny, three counts of injury to real property, two counts of attempted breaking and entering and one count of possession of stolen property. Evans charged Lynch with obstruct, resist and delay. Both men were jailed under $50,000 bonds and they have April 6 court dates.
