A Roanoke Rapids man who seriously injured a store owner in a 2009 shooting and represented himself in court this week will serve between 36 to 46 years in prison.

At the end of the three day trial, Traven Marquette Lee was found guilty of attempted first degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon.

For the first count he was sentenced to 220 to 273 months, the second count 116 to 149 months and the third 103 to 133 months.

“We’re very pleased with the verdict and all the work by the jury,” Halifax County District Attorney Melissa Pelfrey said today.

The victim in the case, Raed Sirhan, was in Jordan where he continues to be treated for the injuries he received in the January 7, 2009, shooting at Nana’s off Highway 48 outside Roanoke Rapids.

A family member then said Sirhan was struck in the colon after Lee fired 10 to 12 rounds from an AK-47. Four rounds hit him.

Pelfrey said it was less expensive for the victim to be treated in Jordan than here. “His wife and family attended and we had several eyewitnesses.”

Lieutenant Bobby Martin of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said investigators were pleased with the outcome. “Two years later the victim is still recovering. Justice was served with the time given.”
