A man who asked for a ride this morning was robbed by the driver, according to the Roanoke Rapids Police Department.

Captain Andy Jackson said the victim asked the person who later robbed him for a ride home from the Presto on Julian R. Allsbrook Highway.

The man agreed and began driving toward the south Hamilton and Clinton street areas when the victim noticed the driver began acting suspicious.

The victim asked to be let out and when he got out of the vehicle, just after midnight, the driver also got out and trained a shotgun on the victim and demanded his wallet.

The victim surrendered his wallet, which contained $270, and went back to Presto to report the crime.

The suspect is described as a young black male with a short Afro. He was wearing a striped shirt and described as standing around 5 feet, 11 inches tall and weighing 140 pounds.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the police department at 252-533-2810 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.

License plate? really? with a shotgun staring you in the face? I'm sure this poor man was just trying to figure out how to survive the encounter. How sad and appalling that we have come to this as a society.

Man, this town is sinking deeper and deeper down! I can remember walking through that part of town between 2-4am just to go get me a Presto "Grub Dog" and not running into any trouble. That was only 15 short years ago!!

Michael, I understnad your comment, but something to also consider is the victim's level of shock concerning the situation. I am sure he was well taken aback by the scenario.

Hope they catch this "Hood Samaritan".

Did he not think to get the license plate number of the car?

it is rough out here these days. I have always maintained a personal policy of accepting rides with only people I have personally gotten to know (and not anyone who knows OF me through someone else). I am NO fool! I rather walk several miles than ride with someone who only knows OF me through another person.....
