Roanoke Rapids police continue to investigate a call Thursday night in which a man allegedly mistakenly shot himself in the leg.

Captain Andy Jackson said police responded to a shooting call at 119 Madison Street. Wade Anthony Gray, a federal parolee, said he had been shot while he walked down the back alley shortly before 10:45 p.m.

Investigation by Detective Corey Dixon, however, determined Gray mistakenly shot himself in the leg when he claimed to hear fireworks and became jumpy.

It was not clear what kind of weapon was involved.

You're probably right, Maureen, but I choose not to use the word accidentally because I believe there are no accidents.

Great headline. Did he intend to shoot himself elsewhere, but aimed for his leg in error? Or did he intend for someone else to be the target? I think the adverb "accidentally" would work better?
