The man who allegedly robbed a man he gave a ride to last week in Roanoke Rapids now faces robbery charges in Virginia.

The Tidewater News of Franklin reports two North Carolina men were arrested for the daylight armed robbery of a 73-year-old Sedley woman outside East Pavilion at Southampton Memorial Hospital on Friday.

Suspects Devonte Riddick and Casey Carter, both 18 of Seaboard, fled into Southampton County before they were arrested off Main Street in Courtland, said Franklin Police Lt. Tim Whitt.

The newspaper reported the victim was visiting someone at the nursing home at 2:50 p.m. when Riddick allegedly approached her from behind with a pistol, grabbed her and stole her purse, Whitt said.

“He jumped into a champagne-colored sport-utility vehicle and sped off on High Street toward Southampton County,” he said.

Police found the gun on the sidewalk and alerted authorities about the vehicle’s description. That helped police find the pair.

The victim was banged up and scraped her knees.

Investigation by Detective Corey Dixon of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department led to the arrest of Riddick in a case last Tuesday.

Riddick faces charges of robbery, assault by pointing a gun, communicating threats and driving without a license. He was jailed on $10,000 bond and has an April 6 court date.

Captain Andy Jackson said part of Dixon’s investigation into the case involved looking at surveillance video from Presto where the victim asked Riddick for a ride.

Riddick agreed and began driving toward the south Hamilton and Clinton street areas when the victim noticed Riddick began acting suspicious.

The victim asked to be let out and when he got out of the vehicle, just after midnight, Riddick also got out and trained a shotgun on the victim and demanded his wallet.

The victim surrendered his wallet, which contained $270, and went back to Presto to report the crime.
