A Roanoke Rapids man was charged Monday with 31 counts of embezzlement from his employer.

Captain Andy Jackson of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department said investigation by Detective Frankie Griffin showed Derrick Neville Rubin, 28, allegedly stole an estimated $18,000 from Bestway Rent to Own at Premier Boulevard.

He allegedly embezzled money from the store from November to January when customers would pay but he would divert money for himself, Jackson said.

Jackson said the company made a complaint to police that records weren't jiving with what was being received.

Rubin, of Land Street, was jailed on $10,000 bond and has a June 1 court date.
