Man escapes serious injury after wreck

A Roanoke Rapids man was spared serious injury after a fence post broke through the driver side windshield of the car he was driving Monday.

According to the report, Donte Gerard Johnson, 18, of Hamilton Street, was driving south on Hamilton Street when he apparently fell asleep at the wheel of a 2010 Kia rental car.

When he awakened the report by the Roanoke Rapids Police Department notes he panicked and hit the gas pedal instead of the brake pedal. The car veered off the road to the left, striking a wooden fence and light pole. The car then crossed to the right side of the road., up on the curve and then crossed back left, coming to a stop in a yard in the next block after traveling 533 feet.

Johnson was cited with unsafe movement.

 

In another wreck Monday, a teacher at Belmont was treated and released after she was struck in the school parking lot after the driver, who was cited for unsafe movement, was blinded by the sun.
