A Weldon man was jailed on $500,000 bond Friday night after allegedly shooting at a town officer who was trying to handcuff him following a foot chase on Johnson Street in the Scoco Park community.

Weldon police Chief Mark Macon said the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office filed most of the charges against Michael Ponton Sr. after he allegedly fired a shot with .45-caliber handgun at officer L. Clanton.

The shooting occurred shortly after Ponton was stopped by officers for riding his bicycle at night without lights when he was nearly hit by a patrol car.

Ponton rode the bike into his yard and had his hands in his coat pocket, Macon said.

He was acting nervous and when officers asked to do a pat down he refused. Following a warrant check, which came back negative, the officers were going to talk to him about the bicycle violation. Ponton ran and was stopped as he approached a snowy embankment.

As Clanton was trying to handcuff him, Ponton fired a round, which missed the officer. Ponton was struck with a taser, which subdued him, Macon said.

Officers recovered the weapon and 20 hits of crack cocaine Ponton allegedly had on him.

As Weldon and the sheriff’s office investigated, Roanoke Rapids officers and state Highway Patrol troopers secured the crime scene.

Ponton was charged with attempted murder, drug charges, possession of a firearm by a felon along with charges filed by the Weldon Police Department for the chase and the bicycle violation.

Macon said the federal bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms has been called to trace the weapon. “We hope ATF will adopt the case since it involved a weapon and drugs.”

Macon said the police department has had run ins with Ponton before, but it never led to this type of reaction from him.

Further details were not immediately available.

Mr. Finney: I do believe Jerry was being sarcastic. He is speaking about the recent KIPP incident where that was the punishment the students received for fighting.

Jerry, please tell me you are being sarcastic?!? Let him shake the officers hand, apologize and write a book report and walk away free?!? Are you kidding? That's what's wrong with the world today!! You get to say sorry and everything is supposed to be okay. WELL IT ISN'T IN THIS CASE! He fired at two police officers with no regard for life or safety! He doesn't get to say "I didn't mean to do it. I'm sorry," and then go home!! He gets to serve time AWAY FROM SOCIETY. And why should the NAACP get involved? How does this case have anything to do with the "advancement of a colored person"? The NAACP is a racist organization in my opinion. And it's offensive that they still refer to African-Americans as "colored"! The NAACP should pack up and leave this country alone instead of stoking the fires of hatred and racism!! Meanwhile, Mr. Ponton goes to jail and then off to prison for his offenses against society.

May I suggest that Mr. Ponton contact the local NAACP and ask David Harvey to help him work this out. Mr. Harvey may be able to get the court and the DA M. Pelfrey to allow Mr. Ponton to shake the officer's hand and appologize and write an essay about one of David Harvey's articles and just walk away from all of this. It has worked for others recently who may have attempted to murder someone if they hadn't been stopped so quickly. Think about it, 7 against 1 could easily have lead to death.
