Butler Butler Halifax County Sheriff's Office

A 31-year-old Roanoke Rapids man died this morning from multiple stab wounds following an argument at a house off Old Halifax Road.

John Butler, 46, of Roanoke Rapids, has been charged in the death of Jeremy “Jay” Hecht, according to Major Bruce Temple of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.

The argument occurred at what Temple described as a social gathering where witnesses saw the stabbing, but he declined to comment on what type event was being held at the house.

The sheriff’s office received the call shortly before 2:45 this morning and found Hecht seriously injured from the stab wounds. He was taken to Halifax Regional Medical Center where he later died.

Temple declined to say where Hecht was stabbed and what kind of weapon was used or whether the weapon was recovered.

Temple said Hecht and Butler were acquainted.

Butler was jailed without the opportunity for bond and was scheduled for a first court appearance this morning.

Detectives continue to investigate the case.

To Justin Harris... Aren't you dating Mr. Butler's daughter? Why would you act as if you didn't know him?Hiding something or you want pity for his family? He is accused of MURDER! Try as you might, Justice will be served in the end!His children are thrown into a really bad situation and our prayers are with both families, But don't lie to boost his defense!A man has died and we will not forget that!

Due to the volume of those posted in that matter, I do not have time to respond to each one personally. Thank for your consideration in this matter.

Most of these comments are just pathetic! UNLESS YOU WERE THERE OR ARE FAMILY OF THE VICTIM OR SUSPECT then don't even post a comment. It's nobody's business why a 46-year old man was out there on a wednesday morning. Its nobodys business why there was a party out there anyway. It could've happened anywhere, to anyone. Y'all need to realize that both men have young children and can easily access this page. They are going to have to live with this. Stop being ignorant and selfish. Prayers are with both families.

Ya know John Butler wont the best guy in the world but he did have a family and 2 beautiful daughters that will always stand by their daddy just like anyone else would!! This has hurt lots of people and both familys have been and will be in my prayers, it is no need for people to attach john's family just because he did this...his daughters read this stuff and they are probley going through enough right now so i think its best for everybody to keep there comments to there self!

Quoting Tammy Norris:
I'm just hoping that what everyone said about this Jay is true. I knoe John and i can't see him doing anything like this to anyone without reasonable cause. If this was self defense it's a shame NC don't have a self defense law..I guess John was supposed to just lie there until they killed him huh...noone knows what they would do in a situation like this i just hope he gets a fair trial and a merciful jury that can see the truth. He couldn't even fight back due to medical conditions... this is crazy.... I pray for his wife and two beautiful daughters that love their Daddy... this needs to be investigated more

the police said he had very little wounds so how was it self defense?

who really knows what happened.if there was drinking going on most of the witnesses are going to be a little off on what really happened.there was no need to pull a knife to defend yourself if you weren't in mortal danger and there was people there that could stop a fight.it is sad for someone so young to lose a life like that.as far as all the comments people are going to want to know what happened and until the whole story is told you will have lies and half truths out there.the problem with stuff like that going on at your house or hunting club is that you are responsible for what goes on there.no different than a bar.

all you people talk about is the hunting club....this could have happened anywhere and for your information it is a HUNTING CLUB, its a coon and deer hunting club and if a few GROWN men want to sit up there after a hunt and have a beer thats there business none of yours like they said there were no complaints before the incident! yall seem to be forgetting what has happened and are more focused on the hunting club...a man has lost his life because of a low life man...if he is soo disabled he shouldnt have been there in the first place! i just think you need to mind your own business this has nothing to do with any of you ...worry about what goes on in your life not other peoples! my prayers are for jay and his family...he was a very good man and would do no harm to anyone he didnt deserve this and neither did his family!
