Current predictions show Irene could even make landfill in Cape Fear around the same time Floyd did., the only difference being Floyd was a Category 2 and Irene is predicted to be a Category 3 storm should it follow its current path.
City and county officials are following the storm closely, Captain Andy Jackson of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department said. “Chief Jeff Hinton and Halifax County Emergency Management are keeping a close eye on the hurricane.”
Jackson advises residents across the city and county to keep up with local forecasts and to start preparing for the worst although the storm could veer from its current path.
That means stocking up on non-perishable items, bottled water, having a battery operated radio and first aid kit. It means making sure prescription medications are filled and that you have cash. “Credit cards don't work without power.”
Jackson said have a list of emergency phone numbers, have diapers and formula stocked and make sure pets have their food and water supplies. He said it is also important to have a manual can opener and ABC type extinguisher as well as personal hygiene supplies.
The city will continue to monitor the track of the storm, Jackson said. “We'll know more in a couple of days … The staff at the police department and public works is prepared should we need to set up a command center.”
