From the 160 mile marker to Rocky Mount is particularly bad, Trooper D.L. Edwards said, and bridges have been closed.
Edwards said it is best for motorists to stay off the roads and Interstate 95. "Troopers are having trouble standing up. I watched one near wreck and watched another flip and overturn."
Edwards said there have been wrecks on Highway 258 in Northampton and Halifax County. "They've been scattered about. I-95 is the worst. DOT is throwing salt and sand as hard they can."
Trooper J.D. Warren said drivers are hitting icy patches, especially at overpasses. Warren is investigating a wreck at the 173 exit where a van slid down the embankment, taking six people to the hospital. Their injuries were not life threatening, he said. "It's been sleet and freezing rain. The majority of the wrecks started around 6 a.m. We've probably had 25 calls since then."
Warren said the majority of the wrecks come from people traveling too fast for conditions and hitting icy patches.
