Trooper Scott Richardson of the Highway Patrol said the single vehicle crash remains under investigation and he is trying to determine which adult in the vehicle was driving. The adult occupants of the vehicle were Marcla Wells of Skippers, Va., and Darryl Martin of Garysburg, the child’s parents.
Richardson said the vehicle was traveling on a straightaway when it went left of the center line and struck a telephone pole. Alcohol is not a factor and the child was properly restrained, Richardson said.
The occupants were transported to Pitt Memorial Hospital where the adults were treated and the child died Friday.
Charges of driving left of center and possibly misdemeanor death by motor vehicle are pending.
