The seized marijuana. The seized marijuana.

A Roanoke Rapids man was charged with several counts Sunday night after officers found an elaborate indoor marijuana operation at his house.

Officers seized 11 plants valued at $10,000 each, watering and ventilation systems and lighting and planting materials from the 806 Carolina Street home of Kristopher Wayne Patterson, 27.

Roanoke Rapids deputy police chief Adam Bondarek said officers from A Squad were following up on an investigation there when they discovered the operation in about a 10 by 12 back room of the house.

The base and filtration system.

"It's one of the most complex ones I've seen," Bondarek said of the operation, which included large water and air filtration systems covered by a tent.

The marijuana was of high quality and came from plants that were several generations old, frosted with a white crystal on the buds.

The officers also seized an undisclosed amount of money from the house.

Patterson, who goes by the nickname KP, was given a suspended sentence for maintaining a place for a controlled substance in 2008 for a 2006 offense, according to state Department of Correction records.

Some of the paraphernalia seized.

That timeline could be an indication of how long the indoor grow operation has been established at the house, Bondarek said.

Patterson faces charges of possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, manufacturing schedule VI, felony possession of schedule VI, maintaining a dwelling and possession of paraphernalia.

He was jailed on a $10,000 unsecured bond and has a March 2 court date.

Tonia, I have read the Bible MULTIPLE TIMES OVER. And according to Genesis, God put ALL things here on Earth that we would need and could use to survive. Including the naturally found marijuana plant. Do not recall God placing Anheuser-Busch in St. Louis or Phillip Morris in Richmond. But none-the-less, the government CAN legislate laws and levy taxes on alcohol and tobacco. And that's all it falls down to. What the government CAN and CAN'T profit from. As soon as they figure out how to get their hands in on the grow and harvest and tax monies for marijuana, none of us will have a say so in it's legalization.

I'm glad to see the RR police department enforcing the law. All the laws, actually. No matter if you agree pot should be legal or not, right now it isn't, and we'll have a safer city when all illegal drug trade is eliminated. And I support that as much as I support putting a stop to speeding, breaking and entering, domestic violence, etc.

No EVERY teenager is NOT going to drink, smoke marijuana or even cigs, have sex or whatever. I am just a little bit more than a teen (22)and me and none of my friends do that stuff. Our parents cared enough to home school me, stay married and take us to church and youth group Its pretty bad when all a bunch of supposedly adults try to justify their bad actions by saying that what they do inst as bad as what someone else does. Maybe you all should start reading the Bible and I really laugh at people calling weed ok because its natural grown. So is poison ivy, are you going to smoke that?

Starting today, we are asking that comments on this case, deal only with the case itself instead of attacks on other readers. It would be simple to just disable comments on this story but we feel everyone has a right to comment. If your comment was not posted it was because it was libelous or was just to attack another reader. There have been several engaging comments on this story but, as we said, starting today, comments will only deal with the case itself. We would also ask to please, if you can, use complete sentences and avoid profanity - Editor

Here's the site I got the amounts from if ya wanna give it a check. http://www.safeaccessnow.net/countyguidelines.htm Either way, the government is wasting time on the fight against a NATURAL SUBSTANCE and missing out on the tax money they could be hauling in from it upon legalization, not DECRIMINALIZATI ON! Rather I agree with RRPD's actions or not, they did their job. Wish it hadn't happened to KP and his girl because they are really great people. But he was charged with a crime he committed, and is willing to face his penalty like a man. Meanwhile 70 grams of crack at the Champion man's house gets $2000 bond. I think it sounds unreasonable with what KP is charged with, and that's my two cents.

Been reading all the comments on this, and man.... there are some extremes on this debate. First, I think pot should be legalized. I no longer smoke since it is illegal and having children means, to me, it isn't worth the risk. wOw!, Let me first point out that an INDOOR plant doesn't generally yield a pound. Maybe a half per plant on a good grow. Friend of mine grows south of here and told me that a pound from indoor would be AMAZING! ISHOULDKNOW, however wOw! knows that the girlfriend and son live there, he is correct. Yes, I know KP. I was with him in his yard as the police were waiting to go into the home. THIS WAS NOT A MARIJUANA RAID! Apparently the son was playing with the cell phone, called 911, and KP and his girlfriend were having an argument and dispatch sent the police out. They went in and happened upon the plants. And Cali says for personal medical use, 6 mature plants OR 12 immature plants AND up to 8 ounces of processed marijuana to be inside their law.

Contact your mayor's office and tell him to have the PD focus on real crime (murders, rapes, breakins).

It's your vote.
