A man wanted for a March break-in at Chaloner Middle School and a larceny at an apartment will spend at least 44 months in prison following a plea bargain today.

Judge Alma Hinton sentenced Jermaine Hale to 44 to 56 months in prison for the break-in as well as having 16 bags of marijuana on him during an October traffic stop. He also got 60 days in prison for DWI.

Hale was ordered to pay $2,000 restitution to the school for stealing a computer after he and allegedly Clarence Burgess threw a cinder block through the window.

Roanoke Rapids police responded to a silent alarm at Chaloner Middle School and Officer Terrence Tyler spotted a suspicious vehicle leaving the area. The vehicle took off and at the end of the chase the driver, Hale, jumped and ran.

Some $13,000 worth of goods was stolen from the Forrest Hills larceny, the Halifax County District Attorney’s Office said.

Hale eluded police following the Chaloner break-in until he was caught last month, cowering in a closet at his mother’s house.

His arrest ended a search for the Roanoke Rapids man who was suspected of being in a vehicle which backed into a Roanoke Rapids patrol car.

Sergeant Perry Parks was responding to a call in the South Rosemary area about a wanted person and saw a person running across Roanoke Avenue in the 1900 block.

At some point during the pursuit the man, thought to be Hale, got in a car and a chase ensued.

The chase ended at a mobile home park in the South Rosemary area and a person, believed to be Hale, jumped out.

At the conclusion of the chase a patrol car was hit and sustained minor damage.
