The first Roanoke Rapids Hospital opened in l912 in a house in the 400 block of Hamilton Street with 10 beds. “Few small communities can claim to have a hospital for 100 years,” said Will Mahone, president of Halifax Regional.
“Observing the 100th anniversary of hospital care in our community is a significant activity,” said Mahone. “We will spend this year planning activities for the community and the staff to have a year-long celebration of 100 years of hospital care in Roanoke Rapids.”
One of the committee’s first tasks is developing a history of Halifax Regional and its predecessor hospitals. If anyone in the community has stories and old photos about Halifax Regional, Halifax Memorial Hospital or Roanoke Rapids Hospital to share, please contact Gail Wade at 252 535-8111.
The committee includes several community leaders with close ties to the hospital. Sarah Adams, Sally Pierce, Dee Coburn, Nathanial Ausby, Tony Martin, Kathy White and Peggy Mann are members of the community. Johnny Draper represents the Board of Directors on the committee.
Representing the hospital are Phyllis Burgess, Lauren Carroll, Audrey Hardy, Josie Jones, Amy Joseph, Chris Lehman, Jen Qualls, Lynn Powell and Gail Wade.
