For First Sergeant J.A. Tony Cameron of the state Highway Patrol, Labor Day weekend was a good one.

“When we don’t have anything significant happen, we consider it a success,” he said Wednesday.

The patrol conducted its Booze It and Lose It and Combined Accident Reduction efforts two troopers short but Cameron believes the presence of the black and silver cars helped. “I would call it a success by nothing happening.”

That doesn’t mean troopers in Halifax and Northampton counties weren’t busy.

In the Combined Accident Reduction campaign, troopers made four DWI arrests and gave out 84 speeding citations. They gave out 21 seat belt citations and four child restraint citations. There were no alcohol related wrecks and troopers assisted 17 motorists in a patrol which saw them drive 3,500 miles.

In the long Booze and Lose It campaign which began on Aug. 26, troopers had eight checking stations and cited one driver for DWI under 21. There were four DWI arrests of people more than 21.

They gave out 31 seat belt violations and four child restraint tickets. There were 138 people cited for speeding, 11 for driving while license revoked and 64 other charges.

The troopers caught seven uninsured motorists and stopped five for reckless driving. Three criminal violations were discovered, one stolen vehicle recovered and two wanted persons caught.
