Marcell Alston knew the man he shot and killed during a home invasion, the sheriff’s office said Friday, but hadn’t seen Carlton Burgess, 61, of Lumberton, N.J., in several years.
Burgess held a domestic grudge with Alston since 1988 and the issues serve as an apparent motive in the attack, the sheriff’s office Friday, the day law enforcement responded to 911 calls from a residence in the 5000 block of Highway 301 in Halifax.
A resident reported that a man knocked on his door and attacked the resident when the door was opened. The suspect assaulted the victim, striking the victim in the head. At some point during the attack, the suspect shot the victim in the lower back area.
The victim managed to get to his own firearm and shot the suspect in the upper torso. The suspect was deceased upon deputies' arrival. The victim was taken to Halifax Regional Medical Center.
There is to be no profanity and there is to be no character assassination even if the person being written about is a suspect in a crime.
