Whether the victim, 21-year-old Jeffrey Cotton, was involved in that fight is unknown, said Lieutenant Bobby Martin of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office.
A large crowd had gathered outside around the fight, which apparently began with an altercation that led to physical blows.
What the fight was about is still unknown Martin said. During the fight patrons of Club Dreams both inside and outside heard multiple gunshots.
Cotton was shot in the upper back around 1:45 while in the parking lot.
The shooter is described as a black male standing 6 feet, 1 inches tall. He had a close hair cut, medium complexion and was wearing a red Aeropostale T-shirt and blue jeans.
The suspect was seen in the club before the shooting.
