Dog encounter causes suspect to flee

A pit bull scared a man who broke into a home and hit the resident on the head with a hammer Friday afternoon, according to the Roanoke Rapids Police Department.

The home invasion occurred around 5:30 p.m. at 1226 Hamilton Street, Deputy Chief Adam Bondarek said.

The person, described as a black male, entered the house and hit the victim on the head but the injuries were not life threatening.

As he continued through the house he was confronted by the victim’s pit bull which made him flee.

The man was dressed in all black and stands about 6 feet, 4 inches tall. He has a heavy build.
