A DWI wreck and a fight highlighted the holiday weekend for the Roanoke Rapids Police Department.

Captain Andy Jackson said officers made five DWI arrests over the weekend, including one which caused $1,300 in damages to the vehicle the man was driving.

Elvin Hester Jenkins of Meadoview Drive drove his car into the protective gas pump barriers at Big Al's on Jackson Street.

Meanwhile, two 16-year-old boys were arrested for disorderly conduct while attending the carnival at Becker Village Mall over the weekend, Jackson said.

Mall security used mace to break up the fight and a boy from Weldon and boy from Roanoke Rapids were charged.

The boys, who Jackson declined to identify, were jailed on $500 secure bonds.

Jackson said officers also responded to eight wrecks, none of them involving serious injuries.

Fighting at the carnival...that is exactly why the children of our area have nothing to do for entertainment. It's sad that A few bad apples can spoil it for everyone. My boys will not be going for this reason.
