Roanoke Rapids police are awaiting the results of a forensics study to determine the cause of injury that has left an infant hospitalized and its parents charged.

Deputy Chief Adam Bondarek said Nicole Blanton, 21, and Anthony Lewis, 24, both of Roanoke Rapids, face a count each of contributing to the abuse and or neglect of a child.

They were arrested Wednesday and both, Bondarek said, were, "assigned by the magistrate's office in Halifax a $500 secured bond."

The pair were released on bond.

The pair's arrest came after the police department received a report on May 19 of a possible child abuse case, Bondarek said. A local physician was examining the child when abnormalities were found and the child taken to a hospital for treatment of what the deputy chief described as traumatic brain injury. "The injury would be consistent with the deplorable conditions the infant has been subjected to."

Bondarek declined to elaborate but did say investigators are waiting on the results of a physical forensics examination. "Our hopes are the results of the forensics examination will provide us with more information on what exactly caused the injury."

Looks like it was only a misdemeanor charge and not a felony abuse. I guess thats why the bond was low.

A woman can accuse a man falsely of assault with no physical signs of abuse and get jailed with a $2,000 bond...but this infant with signs of abuse nets these 2 pieces of trash a $500 Bond? What a joke our system is.

Put them in jail and let them be treated the way the poor child was. I have no respect for anyone like this.

What magistrate would give them a $500 Bond.. That is absolutly rediculous. Where is the protection and voice for this baby? I think it is disgusting. The magistrate should be charged for abuse of the justice system. From the looks of the bond there is no justice. Poor baby I will pray for you..

This just tears my heart apart. How can anyone hurt an innocent child? This child didnt ask to be born into this crazy world. If in fact these parents are found guilty they need to be sentenced to 24 hours alone with me. Child abusers disgust me.
