New rate structures for the Roanoke Rapids Theatre were approved tonight.

City Manager Paul Sabiston told council the rates were based on those from The Centre at Halifax Community College. “It’s a good agreement in general,” he said at the work session. “It’s very competitive with The Centre, some are a little higher like the stage. There are some things they don’t have like VIP areas. I think we have a superior facility. If anyone thinks we’ve overpriced or underestimated we can change these. I think we have a good possibility to make some expense money.”

Under the approved rental rates, stage and auditorium use would be $2,000 for major events and $1,500 for community or nonprofit events.

The city would collect all parking revenue.

Half day VIP room rates with no alcohol would be $300 for the city and $100 for the operator. The same rate with alcohol would be $500 for the city and $150 for the operator.

Full day events for the VIP room with no alcohol would be $500 for the city and $175 for the operator.

The with alcohol rate for a full day would be $900 for the city and $250 for the operator.

A half day for the lobby area with no alcohol would be $500 for the city and $175 for the operator.

The with alcohol fee would be $800 for the city and $250 for the operator.

Full day lobby use with no alcohol would be $900 for the city and $300 for the operator.

With alcohol would be $1,200 for the city and $300 for the operator.

In their usual fashion, the council has totally missed the boat on this, again. Deciding on a rate structure when they can't find anyone who wants to use the facility is an exercise in futility. How about concentrating on how to get this $2 million in debt off the backs of the taxpayer?

Now, let's suppose that I am a business person that is interested in purchasing a theater. I find the RR Theater and look at the track record. The most recent thing that has happened is a new rate structure that allows rental of the stage for $2000 per day. I do the math and figure that if I rent the theater every day for an entire month the best that I can hope for is $60,000. If I buy the building for $12,000,000 I can barely make the mortgage payment on that income, let alone electricity, maintenance and paying for labor to run the venue (not the operator, but management) so why would I be interested in buying the RR Theater? My investement is already running negative. Whoever ends up running or purchasing the theater now has a huge obstacle in place because the city decided to give the building away. What happens if the new owners raise the rent????????? Probably the same thing that happens when a store raises prices, people go somewhere else. Ridiculous.

Hmmmm......

The Centre...... supported by county tax dollars

RR Theatre...... supported by city tax dollars

Is there going to be a price war between two tax payer supported facilities? This is idiotic. What a mess.
