Will McLawhorn, a Northampton County resident who was serving his country in the United States Army, was killed in the line of duty in Afghanistan. News of the incident came this weekend and was confirmed Monday morning. He is the son of the Rev. Willie and Diane McLawhorn of Conway.

McLawhorn was a graduate of Northeast Academy where he was a student-athlete who played basketball and baseball during his prep career. He was a particularly good baseball player and made the All-Roanoke-Chowan team his senior season.

More information will be available in coming editions of the Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald.

My thoughts and prayers go out to this family during this difficult time. I hope this reminds people that we have our loved ones over there fighting for what most take for granted over here, freedom to do as you please. I want to thank those serving our country for sacrificing their lives to protect our lives. I also want to thank the families as well because they too make a sacrifice. God bless this family and many others who also get this news daily and thank you for sharing your loved ones. I have a dear friend who has a son that is serving and as much as it pains her when he goes overseas, she knows it is his choice and she accepts it. There are families like this all over the country and it really ticks me off when people trash our military because they don't recognize this sacrifice that is made. I pray that one day our military and their families are recognized for this sacrifice. In the time being all I can do is say two simple words; THANK YOU!

My heart felt prayers go out to this Soldier and his family. It's bad enough we feel so helpless in this time of war and so many of our babies are losing their life in the line of duty... My thoughts and prayers of peace and gratitude are with you all during this tragic time. God Bless!
