Contested races are beginning to take shape in the May 8 primary.

Former Scotland Neck Mayor James Mills has filed to run against incumbent Michael Wray in the state House of Representatives District 27 race.

A two-way race is developing in the Halifax County Board of Commissioners District 1 seat of Carolyn Johnson, with the incumbent filing but facing competition from Democrat Grover C. Adkins of Enfield. Republican Brad Bradley of Enfield is also running for the seat.

Thus far no one has filed to run against District 2 incumbent Commissioner Marcelle Smith of Scotland Neck or District 3 incumbent Commissioner Rachel Hux.

Thus far there are no opponents to Superior Court Judge Alma Hinton or the three District court judges — Brenda Branch, Teresa Freeman or Turner Stephenson.

There is also no opposition as of yet to incumbent Halifax County Board of Education members Carolyn Hawkins, Donna Hunter and Debbie Hardy.

Incumbent Register of Deeds Judy Evans-Barbee has filed for re-election but no one has yet to file against her.

Senator Edward Jones has no opposition thus far in the Senate District 4 race.

Halifax County Board of Elections Supervisor Kristen Scott said the Weldon board of education race will not be on the ballot until November but no one has filed.

The filing period ends February 29 at noon.
