Complaints of drug sales at a house next to Hobgood Academy led to the arrest of a 56-year-old man last week, according to state Alcohol Law Enforcement.

Benny Williams, of 401 East Commerce Street, faces charges of possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, felony possession of cocaine, possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, maintaining a dwelling to keep a controlled substance, two counts of manufacture, sell or deliver within 1,000 feet of a school, possession of marijuana to a half ounce and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The arrest resulted from citizen complaints of illegal activity at the house and complaints from the school, which the house abuts, Agent Tim Parker said.

Officers from Hobgood, the Department of Correction, Roanoke Rapids and Scotland Neck searched the house and seized 4 grams of marijuana, nine-tenths of a gram of crack cocaine — five rocks — and two bags of marijuana seeds.

While there were complaints of Williams allegedly selling liquor, there was none found at the house, Parker said.

Complaints ranged from people staying at the house for a short time during the day and late afternoon to people hanging around the house.

Williams was jailed on $15,000 bond and has an August 25 court date.
