Clanton Clanton Halifax County Sheriff's Office

Antwaan Clanton, whose sentencing was delayed last month when he and his mother disrupted the proceedings, will serve 28 years to 35 years in prison on charges associated with a breaking and entering.

An administrative hearing on a rape charge he faces in Roanoke Rapids is scheduled for November 14.

Clanton was sentenced Tuesday to back to back sentences of 168 months to 211 months on charges of breaking and entering, larceny and injury to real property.

He was sentenced at a habitual felon status and the injury to real property charge was consolidated with the larceny charge. A new jury was picked to hear the evidence in the sentencing phase.

Clanton gave notice of appeal.

The outburst last month came when Lillian Clanton, as the fourth juror in her son's breaking and entering case was being polled, disagreed with the guilty verdict.

She became verbally abusive in the courtroom of presiding Judge Alma Hinton and was charged with disorderly conduct in a public building and contempt of court.

Her son, 38, of Weldon, then became disruptive as his mother was being escorted out, turning over the table. His resistance caused one deputy to sustain a minor injury and a Taser was deployed to control him.

Clanton's arrest on the July rape charge created state headlines when he was mistakenly released from prison instead of being transported to the Halifax County Jail because of outstanding charges. A prison official at Odom Correctional Institution lost his job over the matter.

An old man asked me once, Son, if today was your last day on earth? Would you be proud of the things you have done?
