Clanton Clanton

A deputy sustained minor injuries and a table was torn up when rape suspect Antwaan Clanton caused a scene in court this morning in Halifax.

Major Bruce Temple of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office said official charges against Clanton, 38 of Weldon, have not been filed as officers continue to investigate the case.

Clanton's mother was also expected to be charged for creating a scene in the courtroom.

Clanton's arrest on the July rape charge created state headlines when he was mistakenly released from prison instead of being transported to the Halifax County Jail because of outstanding charges. A prison official at Odom Correctional Institution lost his job over the matter.

Clanton, 38, was charged in a Friday rape in Roanoke Rapids and a breaking and entering later that evening in Weldon.
