Captain Jay Burch said the count stems from Jonathan Davenport allegedly taking a 2005 Honda CRV from the lot.
Burch said more charges could be filed and expects civil complaints to be filed against Davenport, who worked at Alliance from January to November of last year.
He declined to go into specifics of the case but did say Davenport was in a manager’s position where he had access to every car traded on the lot.
Burch said the sheriff’s office is working with authorities in Chesapeake, Virginia, to locate the man.
WVEC news reported Friday that Davenport was indicted April 30 on six counts of felony larceny in Pasquotank County.
Authorities accuse Davenport of stealing six cars off the lot at Alliance Nissan and selling some of them on the side.
Davenport was a minority owner at Alliance.
On Friday, Davenport said the allegations were untrue and the result of a misunderstanding.
