A call saying authorities should look in Rocky Mount led to the arrest of 29-year-old Herman Lee “Smurf” Edwards, whose uneventful apprehension took place as he was pushing a baby stroller and walking with the child's father who he befriended in Rocky Mount.

Captain Jay Burch of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office said the man knew nothing about Edwards being wanted and will not be charged.

Burch said he didn't think Edwards was pushing the stroller as a shield should he be confronted.

Burch said in the past few days investigators from the sheriff's office and Roanoke Rapids Police Department had been putting pressure on friend's and family when a call was received to look in Rocky Mount.

In a press release on the capture, Burch said, with assistance from the Roanoke Rapids Police Department, the Rocky Mount Police Department, the Nash County Sheriff’s Office and the State Bureau of Investigation, the sheriff’s office was able to arrest Edwards and end a manhunt that has involved Northampton, Halifax and Nash counties.

Edwards was arrested on the parking lot at the Executive Inn in Rocky Mount after being approached by officers from the Rocky Mount Police Department, the Roanoke Rapids Police Department and the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.

The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office has arrested Edwards, of Weldon, with several charges that have ended a crime spree that has occurred for several months, Burch said in the release.

Edwards was served with a warrant for the murder of Brandon Tyrone Peterson that occurred on September 18 and served with a warrant for the first degree murder of Lorenzo Tann Jr. that occurred on September 21 in Roanoke Rapids.

The Roanoke Rapids warrants also include one for a breaking and entering, a larceny and possession of stolen goods that occurred on September 15.

Edwards was also served with a warrant for robbery with a dangerous weapon and assault with a deadly weapon that occurred on March 24, a warrant for felony possession of cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia and a warrant for possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine that occurred on March 14 for the Weldon Police Department.

Edwards was being held without the opportunity for bond and given a court date of October 12.

“I am proud of the efforts displayed by all of the officers that assisted in the efforts to get this murder suspect into custody,” Burch said in the release. “Because of their dedication and countless hours put in on these efforts, we were able to get this man in custody without anyone else getting hurt. I am proud to serve with these officers.”

Great! Sometimes we are skeptical about the police. With this case the true meaning of protect and serve came thru. Hat's off to the po-po.
