On Wednesday, firefighters from Jackson, Lasker and Seaboard fire departments battled a blaze at 308 W. Jefferson St.
The brick facade building is the former Salem and Sons Food & Deli Mart, but was not being used as a business at the time of the fire.
According to Jackson Police Chief John Young, the fire was reported at 4:09 p.m.
Young said the fire began in the kitchen area of the building. Approximately, two dozen firefighters from the three departments where able to extinguish the flames in less than an hour.
Young said there was some damage to the structure, reporting that 1/3 of the roof was burned through.
Young commended the firefighters for their effort.
“They did a great job and all three departments worked well together,” he said.
Young said the State Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire.
Young said the owners of Salem and Sons had planned to reopen the business in May and even after the fire, they plan to reopen the store in the future.
