A Roanoke Rapids man faces an attempted murder charge as well as crack cocaine charges after police searched his vehicle when he turned himself in for a shooting on Vance Street Tuesday night.

Calvin Earl Nelson, 46, who lives in the 600 block of Williams Street, was jailed on $60,000 bond and faces charges of attempted murder, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of cocaine and possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine.

The shooting occurred just before 8:30 p.m. when Nelson allegedly saw the 21-year-old victim riding a scooter in the 900 block of Vance Street.

Captain Andy Jackson of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department said the male victim told police Nelson pulled up and shot him in the hip.

The two had a previous dispute and one of the issues in that dispute was a taillight on Nelson's car had been damaged.

The victim was taken to the hospital and is doing fine, Jackson said.

The hospital alerted police to the shooting and Nelson went to the police station to inquire about the charges and turn himself in, parking his car, however, near Quality Cleaners a block away.

When police went to search the car they found crack cocaine in plain view in the floorboard, two separate packages, one containing five hits and the other containing 15 hits, a total of 5 grams.

Nelson has an October 19 court date. Jackson declined to release the victim's name.
