As the Weldon Police Department continues to investigate the theft of guns from Halifax Community College in July, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms has announced as much as a $2,500 reward for information in the case.

Weldon Police Chief Mark Macon said his investigators have exhausted all leads and thus far haven’t been able to tie the case to anyone local.

“We’re putting it back out there to establish some leads,” he said this morning. “The ATF was gracious enough to provide assistance.”

Sometime between July 23 and July 26 the basic law enforcement training complex was broken into and 18 guns — 17 pistols and one shotgun — were taken, according to a press release from the ATF.

The BLET program provides law enforcement officer certification in North Carolina for employment at the state, county or municipal level and is controlled by the North Carolina Department of Justice, Criminal Justice Standards Division. Halifax Community College is one of the state’s accredited BLET training academy sites.
