A serious lapse in ethics

Today I did something I didn’t mean to do, but I did it and can only apologize.

Getting the morning started, a Tuesday morning, which means I write rants about the week’s fantasy football results before starting work, I noticed several emails coming through.

One of them was from Les Atkins on the Rapids Jam concert announcement. I knew Elizabeth Branham was to appear on Good Morning Lake Country, that was going to be the official announcement for the festival.

What I failed to see in the email from Les was a note that told me to hold it until 8 a.m. I didn’t see it and posted to rrspin.com and its Facebook page.

I not only goofed, I made a severe ethical error which I can only meagerly beg forgiveness for and assure WPTM, Les, Elizabeth and Gil and Liz Cunningham that this was purely a mistake and came from me not taking the time to thoroughly read the email.

This is what happens when you don’t pay attention and I didn’t pay attention. I mistakenly thought since the press release was sent, that meant it was ready to publish and I let it go.

It was a mistake that will never happen again but right now I’m sure I will pay dearly for it because Elizabeth has been one of the biggest supporters of rrspin.com since it began and I feel as if I have betrayed not only a business associate, but a friend when clearly I didn’t mean to.

I’m sure many of you wonder what the big deal is. In journalism, it is a big deal to break an embargo, intentional or not and I’m usually careful about things like that, making sure it’s OK to release before posting.

This morning, I assumed, assumed that because the press release was sent everything was OK. Worse than that, I failed to read the whole release, especially the top portion which clearly said hold for 8 a.m.

I was unethical and although I didn’t mean to be I was. I cheated the organizers of the events, I cheated other media in the area — WPTM and the Daily Herald — I cheated the readers.

I have few options in this matter because no matter what I say I will be thought of as someone who can no longer be trusted and that’s what hurts the most by unintentionally breaking this embargo.

As my close friends know, I am a person who likes to be liked and while I have my flaws and have done things I shouldn’t have, acceptance is important to me.

The way my options stand right now, I can give this website up and be known as a failure or I can suck this up and hope those I hurt by doing this will forgive me. The options are few and what I will do right now is ask for forgiveness and hope I can be forgiven and work hard to regain trustworthiness from those I wronged this morning.

That’s how big a deal what I did this morning was. It may have been a simple press release to the readers but behind the scenes, what I did has huge implications for the future of rrspin.com. Among certain circles now I will look like a liar, someone who can’t be trusted, a hypocrite who preaches journalism ethics to anyone who will listen.

This will take some time for me to get over and the only thing I can do is take the hit and the potential loss of readers. That’s why what I did this morning was such a big deal and all I can do is ask for forgiveness from those I harmed and the readers of rrspin.com — Lance Martin

The contract is as stated in the previous thread and this after double checking with the mayor and city manager: $2,000 rental fee per show and $2 per ticket — Lance Martin

Ethics? Ethics? Really?

Did Elizabeth know that she was working on RR Jam when she signed the contract with the city to run the theatre?

Did she inform the city of her involvement with another group before she signed the management contract?

Did the city receive any rent money for the use of the theatre for the announcement of the RR Jam?

Where are the 2 shows a month?

The last response that you posted on another thread to similiar questions was a quote from an rrspin article about the proposed DRAFT contract. What does the REAL contract say?

Going by the estimate of 85% capacity for OCMS, and the information from the DRAFT contract, 1275 people were in attendance times $2 per ticket and $2000 rent that gives you $4550. Why is it so hard to get these figures from the city?

If you are concerned your ethical ground, who are you comparing yourself too? Surely not anyone involved with the theatre.

How about the individuals you throw under the bus when they call and ask about potential news worthy concerns....How about you fanning flames of discontent by passing along false info about these individuals and twisting their questions because you have lost all your objectivity because of personal relationships....What a great news man you are Lance....good luck getting any more help from the people you have thrown under the bus. Ethics my (expletive deleted)...You have none

Lance,

I can assure you that any journalist that has been working a significant amount of time in the field has done something similar. I certainly don't believe this falls under the category of ethic violations - it was a simple mistake. It would only be an ethics violation if you intentionally did it to scoop the other media outlets.

According to the other comments the Daily Herald also posted the story before the 8:00 am embargo and yet their site does not list an apology.

Embargo's are important in the media, and must be respected. Breaking it intentionally would be one of the worst ethic violations a journalistic can commit. But thats not what you did, what you did was make a mistake. Learn from it, move it, but dont get down or dwell on it.

Lance,

Don't stress about it!
I think you handled the situation very well. You made a mistake, admitted to it, and apologized to all who were involved.
Get up, dust yourself off, and get back to doing what you do best!!

Lance,

I agree with all above, it is not like you gave out military secrets to the Taliban. You have always been fair, trustworthy and most importantly HUMAN. We all make mistakes. As long as you learn from them and do not continue to do it over and over then you are fine. Non-humans are perfect and do not make mistakes. Keep doing what your doing and if those involved don't like, they need to put on their big girl and boy panties and deal with it. There shouldn't be any skin off of anyone's nose about this. Keep up the good work!!!!

Sounds like a lapse of eyesight rather than a lapse of ethics. Keep it going man.

Lance,

I just want to point out the same thing that "That Guy" and "Another Guy" did. It was on rapidsjam.com and the Herald site well before 8am. Besides, it's not like you STOLE information that wasn't to be released until next week. It was a concert update. NO biggie here man. No one will pay for this "early leak" with their life.

Water off your back man. Les and Mrs. Branham are VERY understanding folks. I know both of them and know that it is not their way to hold grudges over a simple mistake.

Lance,

I noticed on the Daily Heralds website that the same story posted at 7:43am. Why are they not taking heat for this?

Also I applaud you for the apology and encourage you to continue providing news to the masses.

Thanks
